My 1999 Ford Explorer shifter isn't in the gear it says its in?

When the vehicle is really in park, the shifter on the column says "R"- and to go in reverse, it says "N" and to drive the shifter says "2"-like the whole shifter "letters" have moved or shifted down one spot?  This just happened?? Is this a major repair?

there is a cable that connects to the indicator on the shift lever that may have come loose
