1999 Ford Explorer V8 grinding while accelerating

Asked by Malaki929 Oct 18, 2016 at 03:45 PM about the 1999 Ford Explorer 4 Dr Eddie Bauer SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

as stated above, it makes like a plastic-grinding sound when i press the gas,
but stops when i let up. If I continue down the road a bit, when I decelerate it
kills the engine and makes it seem as though my battery is dead. Checked Oil
pressure and battery charge, both are fine

Your information is pretty vague but check the fan belt and the cooling fan to see if there is a problem.

Basically it does the same as when the fab belt slips as far as how it kills the engine, but the belt is still on. The only difference is that a clicking/grinding sound occurs beforehand, and only when I'm pressing the gas

If you have a engine driven cooling fan and a bad motor mount it could cause the fan to hit the shroud and make noise.

Your car is old and probably has a lot of miles on it. If the fan belt is squealing then your battery may be not getting a proper charge.

Fan belt isn't squealing. Battery charging fine. Shows 12.5 V on meter. Alternator is in good shape, just had it tested in three diff parts shops

You said the fan belt is slipping which is why I gave the answer that I did. You may need a tuneup if the car dies when you take your foot off the gas or you may have a problem with the idle air control valve. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/how-to- iac-valve-cleaning-thread-w-pics.84220/
