my 1999 ford explorer's driver door won't stay open, how do I fix that

When I open the driver's door it won't stay open on even a small incline

The spring has probably popped out. Compare the hinge to the one on the passenger side. It will be obvious if the spring is gone. When you get the replacement, also buy a spring compressor to install it (if you value your sight!).
