ATF is a low viscosity oil with a high amount of detergents, a little won't hurt an engine and sometimes is even used as a cleaner between oil changes. If he used more than one quart, I'd get the oil changed. If he added too much, it can let an engine temperature to run higher. Whether that caused your blown head gasket is really impossible to tell, it may have been a contributing factor, or it may not have been.

Just change the oil and filter. I seriously doubt there is any connection to the head gasket failure.

Agree with both posts.....I've used ATF in the engine of my different newly purchased 2nd hand vehicles to clean tgem out before fresh oil change, ATF high in detergents...Cleaning power just like Guud Ole "Mr Clean"
