My 2017 Subaru Outback has failed to start 6 times. ?

Service has told me that it is due to my driving in the city (14 mile trips) and the
alternator is not charging enough. Then they said a update in program was
installed to correct this and now I get about 10 MPG, is this a real thing

To verify the MPG you need to fill it up, record the miles on the car and then drive until you need gas again. Fill it up and record the gallons and miles. Divide the miles driven by the gallons to find out your miles per gallon.

The 2010+ trip computer is pretty accurate. But yes, if you just crawl in the city you'll get seriously low eco. I'd try resetting trip odo to zero and then driving a few miles at 40-70 mph continuously. You should see the ave mpg settle between 28 to 35 mpg. Of course this has nothing to do with your battery nor alternator, but I suppose it could be possible that if you have the AC on, the heated seats, and the headlights...and are crawling in stop 'n go traffic getting 10mpg...you might not be charging that battery fully. But a goof half-hour highway run should nearly fully recharge the battery so that it starts easily the next morning. If not then you have a bad battery, alternator, or parasitic drain.
Thanks, I had done all that as well as measured use of fuel and sustained speed of 55. Mileage was great until they installed their fix. Seems no-one has heard of this so called computer software update to fix this condition, Thanks to all for your advice.
