Subaru Forester 2017 Battery Problems

Asked by Richard May 23, 2019 at 09:56 PM about the 2017 Subaru Forester 2.5i Premium

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Comment: my 2017 Forester with 13,000
refused to start twice in the last two weeks
after sitting for a couple days. We mostly got
the car for winter driving an lived the way it
handled our winter snow this year. But,
battery problems less than two years after
buying the car?  The explanations here fit the
story from the AAA guy who took the call.
The cheap, low (390) amp battery the put in
the car is worthless. They do replacements
with a 550 amp battery, not the 390, which
suggests they know it’s a bad battery to start
with. I bought a new 640 amp battery
installed on the spot from AAA. The AAA guy
said to get a home charger so you can
charge up the amps every two or three
months. He said the draining problem is
common with new cars with a lot of
electronics. I saved the dealership and myself
time and either a tow or the risk of having a
problem in rush hour traffic. The dealer
wanted $139 plus $60 installation for the
replacement battery, so I’m thinking I saved
the dealer and Subaru America some money
by dealing with it myself. I’ll be working on
some level of reimbursement.

I have a 2018 Forester and had a weak battery the first few months I had it...told them it was weak sounding when it started....they replaced with a Subaru brand battery (the factory one was a smaller no-name one) under warranty and it works fine now....apparently they must but real cheap ones in at the factory....

Complain to SOA but first read the warranty to see how long the coverage is for the battery. I am pretty sure the battery should have been covered so I wonder why they wanted to charge you.
