Do you have to remove the transmission in order to remove the engine?

No but some techs feel it is easier then separating them.

It's easiest to remove them together then separate the trans from the engine. I've don it this way on a hundred cars. If you separate the two before you remove the engine, most cars don't have support mounts for the front of the trans and you'd have to add a jack to do that. Then the trans could slip off and you'd be left with a mess..... Just do it the easy way.
