Odometer not spinning

Asked by HelpMe123456789 May 07, 2017 at 07:13 PM about the 2000 Ford Taurus SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 ford taurus. Spedometer works. Trip
and odometer not spinning. Took out the cluster
and the gears look ok. Found a lotion-like
substance on the worm gear when i pulled out the
stepper motor. Cleaned the substance up and put it
back in. Still not spinning. Is it my motor? because
the gears look fine.

It is probably the stepper motor that failed if all else is working. You might be able to figure out a way to test or replace it. Check a salvage yard for parts. That white substance on the gear was probably a lubricant that doesn't damage plastic parts. Maybe it was a lithium lube but I wouldn't worry about it.
