smoking from at or near catalytic converter after 10 block drive

Asked by hat67 Feb 26, 2015 at 01:27 PM about the 2000 Ford Taurus LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Taurus flexfuel. 3.0l,that I have basically quit using because it smokes from
under the engine compartment after driving a few blocks. The engine runs good, it starts
good, and the temp gauge is in the normal. It was suggested to me that a clogged
catalytic converter might be the problem. I don't want to continue driving if it will turn into a
larger problem, so want to locate and fix this.

I would be very cautious, if it happens that it is ATF leaking, the exhaust is hot enough, and cat. convertor is even hotter... to ignite it and you will have a serious fire. Motor oil does not ignite as easily, but it sounds like one or the other is leaking and getting on exhaust. And if it runs well, it's not a clogged cat
