Did the rear main seal blow

Asked by Humble Apr 13, 2023 at 04:12 AM about the 1988 Chevrolet C/K 1500 Silverado LB 4WD

Driving down the road and engine starts to lose power and then
overheats and starts to blow black smoke from the tail pipe. Pull
over and steam is coming from engine and there is a distinct smell
of wet, burnt rubber. Then I see oil dripping rather steadily from
underneath the back of the engine. Crawling underneath the truck
and looking around I see fresh oil on everything located on the
driver's side rear bottom area of the engine and tranny.

Rear main will be dripping right out of the bottom between the engine and transmission. Where your talking about is the oil filter adapter area. So it could be the seals for the adapter assembly or you threw a rod through the engine block.

If you're lucky one of the oil cooler lines that goes from the engine to the radiator blew apart or possibly the radiator. Otherwise it sounds like you threw a connecting rod and it's time for a new truck! Hope that helps! Jim
