I am considering buying a Ford Ranger for my first truck. I was wondering, how many miles can you put on the V6 engine?

mark is right..also have it checked out by someone how knows his stuff... if you take care of the truck it will run a long time...the problem is what has happened in 15 years.

Tennisshoes is correct. In 2000 I purchased a Ranger 4x4 v6 to save some fuel over my 1997 F150 Supercab 4x4 4.6l. The new Ranger got nearly the same fuel mileage as my F150. No more small trucks for me.

I see that the Ford Ranger V6 has a 3 Litre engine. Would you offer simliar advice for someone considering a 2002 GMC Sonoma truck with the 4.3 Vortec engine? My stepson has this truck, he's got a lot of miles on it, 180,000 , but, lately, it's causing a lot of problems for him. Mileage is not great and recently had an intake valve fixed along with a number of other repairs and a new spider injector. He's got the original transmission and it was shifting peculiar, now thinks he might need a computer? Is the life of this engine greater than the Ford? And, do you think it's a 300,000 mile motor. He seems to think it is. I've been encouraging him to consider another vehicle as his is rusting out. Any suggestions?

By the way, the 4.3 Vortec is a V6.

Tennis shoes - hey, thanks for your answer. My son's truck looks pretty bad, but, it's a SLS, Z71, 4WD, I'm just not sure how long it's got. So, the transmission on these things are generally solid? Thankfully, he never said anything about overheating issues. It did idle rough, but, once it gets going smoothes out a bit. Worst part is that he was running on 5 out of 6 cylinders for about a year.

Tennis shoes- Wow, 400,000 miles on the original transmission is very impressive. Do you think that my Subaru Outback 2.5 Four can make it to 300,000 miles? I have a 2010 model with the older EJ25 Series 2 engine, not the newer FB engine with some recent oil consumption problems. I haven't seen any problems with my car since I acquired it about 18 months ago. Would like your opinion, thanks.

Overheating is a big issue on all of the v6 small trucks from every brand. Blown or cracked heads are not a cheap fix either.
