Yes, you can keep driving it, but get the trouble codes read as soon as you can. Most auto parts stores can do that for free. If the check engine light starts FLASHING while driving however, that's when you stop and park it.

Blue book values shows to be right around 4K to 5K, with dealer retail just under 7K, for the base model with 100,000 miles. There are a lot of variables I can't factor in since I know nothing about your car. I'd ask about the check engine light or test drive it to a parts store and get it read (only takes a few minutes). They can tell you if it's a simple fix or if it's something major. This could be a good buy, assuming it doesn't have 200K miles on it. Ask if the timing belt or transmission has been serviced if they were due for it.
