79 trans am 10th Anniversary 400 4spd idling like crap timing?

Asked by Joe Apr 23, 2019 at 11:08 AM about the 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car idles like crap! It was running great until 1 day I gave it gas and it started popping like it was missing.  Found out the distributor was loose.  I tried timing it but had no luck.  It idles way better but still pops when I disconnect the vacuum advance.  Carb was rebuilt and fuel pump and filter changed! What the hell could it be??  What should I start with?  Looking to sell the car but want it running before I do.

When you say the distributor was loose, do you mean it could have jumped position? If so, you will not be able to get the car running right until you reposition the distributor gear to align with the engines firing sequence. Not enough room to describe the process here but check out internet sites if you think this may be your cause.
