Why will my truck start in only the neutral position?

Hi, I am an college student majoring in Automotive Service Technology. I have 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 4wd automatic transmission. I tested my battery, starter, and my alternator. They passed. I put my truck into neutral and it started. I would just like some help to figure out what would cause that sort of problem.

The truck's 22 years old and that's a lot of starts in Park. It's likely that the neutral safety switch has a burn spot there. As there's no burn spot in Neutral, the truck starts fine there. Just replace the neutral safety switch.
