starter wont engage until you disconnect cables and reconnect

have a 2000 mustang  woke up today  and wouldnt  start  no turn over or nothing    and when i turned key to start it  head lights wouldnt   dim  which means wasnt drawing power   when i disconnected  cables and reattach them it starts up  then  when go to start it again  same thing until i discconnect  and reconnect agaon   help please

Probably the starter solenoid or the cable connection at the starter or battery.
