2009 M35x - If the ball joint at the end of the lower control arm starts to experience a little up/down play does the entire control arm need to be replaced?

Asked by TomSorny Feb 23, 2016 at 12:22 PM about the 2009 INFINITI M35 x AWD with Aluminum Trim

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was recently at a garage and they said that since there is wiggle in the knuckle of the ball joint just inside the front tires of the lower control arm, they both need to be replaced.  Immediately.  I'm trying to get more opinions on this before I invest another $1300-$1500 in my car.  Thanks to anyone who can help!

You would not need the hole control arm replaced. Ball joints can be replaced individually. I always replace what is bad only. Of course it it wise to get both replaced, but I like getting my moneys worth out of a part. If a ball joint is tight, and not rusted up, it don't have to be replaced.

How much do you trust the shop that told you to replace them immediately? Step back and get a second opinion. Parts do wear out but this sounds like they are trying to manufacture a little business for themselves. Gives the business a bad name.

They are probably just covering their A**. If they just did the one and something went wrong with the other side they could be sued. It doesn't mean they would lose, but they would need to defend it and that cost money. And, in their mind it might just be a safety factor. Not all mechanics are in it ONLY for the money.
