2004 Hyundai Accent 1.6L

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
The car sometimes 'hesitates' when cranking. Doesn't
do it all the time but sometimes to the point where it
seems like it's not going to start up. Hot or cold doesn't
seem to matter. Has a 3 month old timing belt
replacement. Problem existed before that. I think I
have attached an 11 second .wav file so you can hear
it. Any suggestions most appreciated! Thanks, Mike.

I guess the wav file didn't upload. But, it turns over, hesitates for a second or 2 (sometimes longer) continues to crank over and then starts up...
It sounds as if you have a dead spot on the starter motor. The motor turns a couple times, then it stops on the burn spot. It stays there and after it heats up and current flows again, the motor resumes turning. Have someone else crank the car and when this happens, hit the starter with a wood mallet of hammer handle. If this shocks it into moving, have the starter replaced.
Thanks. I have the starter out. Just waiting on the delivery truck to bring the new one!
