2007 Subaru Outback 2.5 4 cyl non-turbo Misfire Mystery

Asked by J. Kat Dec 14, 2017 at 05:46 PM about the 2007 Subaru Outback 2.5 XT Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a misfire on Cyl 4 that can't seem to be fixed. No other codes are
being thrown. All the usual things have been checked/replaced/tested and
my mechanic is at a loss currently. He is a subbie specialist and actually has
the exact same car himself, so he isn't giving up but... has anyone else ever
had a mysterious misfire? Done/checked: plugs, wires, coil, cam shaft,
heads, cyl lead, fuel injector, knock/cam/crank sensors, readjusted values,
evc system, compression tested 180lbs, and has spark.... any ideas gang??

Is the number #4 plug being fouled? If so is it oil or carbon?

May have to lap the #4 valves and secure the valve guide, as it might be slipping up and down. Remove exhaust and take a peek up there to see guide. But before doing that check carefully for a cracked post on the coil...and dress the #4 wire well away from metal. 80% of the time I find misfire codes to be from tight cable-dressing, 10% from a bad coil. Luckily, I've yet to have to drop a head, but other gurus certainly have.
