Knocking sound while driving

Asked by TotalClarity Jan 06, 2018 at 05:41 PM about the 2010 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Limited

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I kind of need help diagnosing an issue on my impreza (Standard
transmision) (not wrx or sti unfortunately). I was driving late at night and
someone pulled up beside me wanting to race at the light. So I stepped on
the gas in neutral, to rev the engine. Then the light turned green on me while
it was in a high RPM range (5 to 6). And I threw it into first gear. After I beat
the jeep, I was just driving regularly and started to hear a knocking sound. I
turned down the music in the car and noticed it was knocking. I found some
where to pull over and did a fluid check (Engine and transmission). All fluids
were at the correct levels. I revved the engine to hear if the knocking sound
came from it. I couldn't replicate the sound. I then checked all the gears
making sure that they were all going into and out of gear smoothly and they
did.The knocking sound only comes on while the car is moving and doesn't
get faster and faster, while accelerating. So my theory is that I over torqued
the axle, when I threw that car into gear. Does anybody a have any theories
or could help solve the issue?

Maybe you damaged a CV joint but the fact that the sound stays the same regardless of speed does not fit.

Can't imagine you damaged a half-shaft unless maybe you severely torqued it while turning sharply. More likely you damaged a rod bearing by over-revving under load. If you hear it knocking under moderate acceleration...especially uphill under load, let's say, it's probably a rod bearing. Nothing you can do about it now...and sometimes you'll sit on this annoying plateau for many months and years. But if you keep up with the stupid hole shots you'll throw that rod right through the case...so watch it!
