i think maybe i have, but how do i get my car cranking again? i am totally lost as to what to do. when i use my master key to try and lock the doors, they immediately unlock when i remove the key. does that help narrow it down?

yes. i bought the car used. i have only the one key. been driving the car 3 years. what could i have done to cause such a problem? i only opened the passenger side door panel to check a stuck window. this is crazy!

Do you have a car/key symbol in the dash? That's the anti-theft activated. Also the doors/windows/locks are controlled by the CCM, comfort control module, that may need to be reactivated since you may have inadvertently disconnected one of the doors, from the manual; "When it loses communication, [...] will prevent all the other computers from interacting..." Check fuse #14 as that governs the CCM. If it's good and all wiring harnesses are connected, then reset the CCM. Here is a good link in that regard: https://natnkat.wordpress.com/writing/how-to-repair-the-comfort-control-module-ccm-for-the-volkswagen-passat/
