I would think that the ability to pay is based upon your monthly income and other relative expenses, not particularly the down payment.

Try financing through a Federal Credit Union, they're more consumer friendly.

I've seen leases on Ford Fiestas as low as $49 per month, sure you have to put an amount down, but, that's pretty inexpensive for a car these days and it's brand new, an old 1998 Honda as well as it is may have some needed repairs, be careful.
