The most common cause of this failure is the head unit (with the guages). The main (BIG) cable going into the printed board in the head unit, loses contact at one or more solder connections on the printed board (almost always the ground contact point). Same thing happened to my 03 and I took it out, carefully resoldered the connections and reinstalled it. Works great.
