Can I put a 1998 VW Golf Mk 4 2.0 in a 2002 VW Golf GL 2.0 with a 5 speed?

I can't address the compatibility of the harness, but I can say that you should never install an earlier engine in modern cars. You could move all the computers and modules to adapt the older engine, but no one with a brain is going to do that. Find a mechanic who knows old VWs and he'll have sources for engines. A proper replacement would likely cost less than you think and won't cause problems in the rest of the car due to a computer conversion.
