01 Windstar

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I just got this van a few days ago. I
traded it for my car since I needed
something bigger. Anyways I have a few
error codes p0171/p0174 plus miss fires on
4/5 and (new)egr code. Everything I have
read says to smoke the van and check for
vac leaks. But all the codes are telling me to
change 02 sensors. The next problem is
hard shifting from 1st to 2nd. Trans fluid
looks brown and smells kinda burnt. It had
trans replaced in 8/10 so I'm guessing it
hasn't been changed since.

Would I be better off smoking the engine for
vac leaks or changing the 02 and changing
trans fluid and filter to fix the hard shifts?

Yea that's what I figured to do last. I smoked it and found no leaks. But I did find that plugs and wires are still factory. Pulled 4&5 5 was caked with crap REAL bad. I've never seen one like it in all the plugs I have changed. Now what about the trans? Would changing the fluid and filter fix that problem or would it be something more?
