Did you find a answer to this question? I have to swap a engine into my 98. I was hoping a 96 will work but idk...

Both the W and the X engines are listed as engine type 6-262 (4.3) MFI under 1998-99 chevorolet truck and 2000-2004 in this GM vin decoder. https://vehicleidentificationnumber.com/vin-decoder/gmc-general-motors-truck.html
