Start with a trouble code reader and see what faults come up and a Haynes Repair manual for your year make and model. They are inexpensive and when you get the codes you start with the first item in the list, make the repair then drive the car again and keep checking for new codes or remaining codes until fixed. It sounds more like a clogged catalytic converter and a back fire though.
