My 2001 ford taurus temperature gauge quickly goes from lower than halfway point to 3/4 point in hot region. Could the thermostat need replaced? Otherwise runs fine in hot weather/summertime here.

I suspect it either the thermostat or the electric radiator fan ...Turn off CD-Radio so you can hear ,,, then try to observe if you can correlate the fan coming on/off with the temp change when at a stop. Make sure your coolant is clean and it would not hurt to put some anti-rust and water pump lube in the coolant. Good Luck
