If temperature gauge is registering the car is over heating but the engine is not hot enough to be that of an overheating engine, what could be the problem?

I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX. The check
engine light came on shortly after I bought,
with no problems. Today it started to over
heat and cooled down when I filled the
coolant. But the coolant is not leaking and
the gauge registers that it is over heating
but it doesn't seem to be.
