Truck has no power after reconnecting battery cables

Asked by Guru96T5HS Oct 13, 2022 at 08:46 PM about the 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My info screen had gone black, radio worked, but no back up camera, etc. It
has done this once about a month after buying the truck, they basically re-
installed the firmware/software and it was good. So I called the dealership,
can’t get it in for over a week. Service advisor suggested I try disconnecting
the battery cables, let it sit for at least an hour, then reconnect the battery
cables. He said that sometimes works, resets the system. So I did what he
instructed. But after reconnecting the battery cables, red first, black second,
the truck had power, I opened the door to get in, interior lighting came on. But
when I inserted the key to start the truck, everything went dead. No power
whatsoever. Did I blow something? What happened? Anything I can do outside
of towing it back to my local shop?

The service advisor is an idiot . Find another shop to fix it , you need a technician not a salesman .

Idiot is right, by disconnecting the battery you just killed all the programming setup in the computers, so now you will need to have it reflashed to bring everything online. Never ever disconnect the battery without using the saver tool that plugs into the OBD 2 port. Call around and see if any shops can do a total reflash, if none can be found then your stuck with the dealership to do it.

I repeated the battery connection process, I think the bolt that tightens the negative cable to the post wasn't fully tightened. Reconnected both cables, truck starts, all good there. My Intelilink still is black. So I'm back where I started.
