Question type: Maintenance & Repair

49400 miles. Leaking right front and rear struts. Mechanic advises no safety issue, but I am not so sure. Please advise. Thanks.

not sure where you are from, but i used to do state inspections in mass and if you're struts had too much bounce it failed...i would say its a safety issue

ps i see where he's coming from, when you replace struts you do them in pairs. ie both front struts at the same time. you can't just do one at a time. in your case you would have to replace all 4.

In the early stages of leakage, it will not be a safety issue. If left for an extended amount of time, it could cause wheel hop and problems while braking. If they are leaking they should be replaced.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I had better bite the bullet and have the struts replaced. I am looking at $766.00 plus tax for the front and $588.00 plus tax for the rear. It will be less if they are both done at the same time since I will only have to pay for one alignment instead of two.( Shop fees will be additional). Quote from Honda dealer in Florida.

i agree with everything the others have said. I would definately get a second opinion. I dont really see honda struts starting to leak with such low miles.Just to make sure they are actually leaking.
