Mass air flow sensor

Asked by Zach Jul 06, 2019 at 01:39 PM about the 2016 Nissan Sentra SV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a new mass air flow sensor but the clip fitting is
different so I can't use it, I have tried a few different brands
but they don't fit. I know that I am putting in the right year
make and model but they all are the same, too big. Any idea
why this is happening?

Ditto. Same thing with my wife's car: the clip fitting isn't centered on the plastic around the electrical prongs. After ordering one and returning it, we were told by a guy at Autozone that the part is different for vehicles made before/after July of 2016, and unfortunately haven't been able to find the one for hers (before July) anywhere online yet. Local parts stores said that we either had to special order or to go to the dealership, but we were trying to do it for under $200.

you should never use a aftermarket mass airflow sensor in your nissan. It will more times then not, throw your fuel air ratio values into flux. You should always go with OEM. Your dealership has them for 309 as stated above. If you need it now. you can find them online at a discount from discount Nissan parts dealers. Either at the discount but not great price.. or used. Sometimes the used option is the best option. Also your nissan may have a TSB (tech service bulletin related to the Relearn. You will have to bring the car to the dealership to be programed as Nissan has some auto makes that have a flaw and will not relearn on their own. you can google Reset for nissan. Do that. your resetting, not programing. you will have to drive the car for a little bit. I always say do a Drive cycle. Google that. Drive cycle. and if it does not correct. you probably have a make with the TSB.. and need to drop it off or bring it in.. so we can program it. I say we. Cause I am a Cert Master Tech. That being said. Disclaimer: I am not telling you how to fix your engine. You do this at your own risk. I am not working on your car. I am giving you general knowledge. You should always have your car looked at if your unable to fix a issue on your own. Never drive a car with a Check engine light that flashes. An always address a light C.E.L. As soon as you see it. Delaying or driving long term with one. Can cause massive damage to expensive parts.

My CEL came on a couple monthes ago. The code said it was the mass air flow sensor. I disconnected the battery and carefully cleaned the sensor and that seamed to work. A week later the light came back on. So I replaced the sensor this time. The light went out and has not come back now for months. However, i noticed that my gas mileage has gon from around 32mpg to 21mpg instantly. Not gradually. My Nissan sentra has less than 30k total miles on it. Is there a way to find out if my vehicle has that "TSB" without having to bring it in to the dealership. I called my nissan dealer today and if i give them the car just to diagnose, charge at minimum $150.00 just to tell me if the problem is my mass air flow sensor or not. That does not include ANY OTHER diagnostics needed incase the problem is not that sensor. That does not include one second of repair time or parts, which he told me that they would replace the already brand new sensor regaurdless. Now what???
