Towing a 1963 vintage camper 5,000 miles?

Asked by heawi Sep 10, 2021 at 03:26 AM about the 2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium

Question type: General

Anyone have experience with towing vintage
campers long distances? How should I
prepare my 2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i
premium? What’s the average gas mileage
while towing? The camper is a lightweight
trailer, not over 1200lbs. Unfortunately, it does
not come with brakes. Any tips? Advice? Etc?

Make sure the trailer wheel bearings are in good shape. My advice is to install trailer brakes. That trailer has a lot of frontal area so slow down. I would also do a 100 mile trial run before going across country. I would do fluid and filter changes in the Subie and make sure the brakes, cooling system hoses, tires, etc. are all in good shape.

Also factor in all your stuff which will add hundreds of pounds. I would guess you will be lucky to get 20 mpg. Get a trailer spare tire if you do not have one.
