What has caused 3 rd gear to go out

Usually on these transmissions they have two shifter solenoids. One is for 1st and 2nd hear, second one is for 3rd and 4th gear. These solenoids are cheap and replaceable on these vehicles. But the worst thing that might be happening is the transmission going out since the 4L60E first drops Overdrive, than 4th, and lastly 3rd to the point 2nd gear is the highest gear available.
