Air conditioning problem in 2016 7 passenger explorer xlt

Asked by Guru6HM2Y Mar 23, 2020 at 09:36 AM about the 2016 Ford Explorer XLT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2016 I purchased a 2016 explorer 7 passenger. In 2018 the air conditioning
went. Ford dealership replaced 2 pipes going to the rear because they were
corroded. In 2018 after the repair (covered by warranty) I took my vehicle to
KROWN and had it undercoated to protect these pipes. In 2019 I took the
vehicle to the ford dealership and again had the vehicle undercoated to protect
the pipes. Now I am experiencing the same problems with air conditioning.
Same problem. This will be the 3rd set of pipes in 4 years. This time it will cost
around $1200:00 to replace them. Less than 100,000 kms. Any suggestions?  I
love this vehicle.

Unfortunately undercoating will sometimes do more harm than good. Moisture can get trapped in between the body of the vehicle and the undercoating material. This can cause rust and corrosion that was trying to be avoided by the undercoating in the first place! I'd suggest doing some research and see if the pipe assembly is available in the aftermarket in stainless steel. You can also wash the underside of the vehicle with a pressure washer twice a year. Many automatic car washes and probably your local Ford Dealer offer this service. This will help keep everything clean under there and prevent rust and corrosion in the future. This is especially important if you live in an area where salt is used in the wintertime to help clear the roads. Spring and fall are good times to wash the undercarriage. Hope that helps! Jim

I,also, have a 2016 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition and have had this same problem. In 2017, 2018 and 2019 I had the tubes replaced for the AC because of holes causing leaks. It is under warranty but I live 90 minutes from the nearest dealership and am sick of the time I am spending trying to find out why this keeps happening. My AC is out again for the 4th time. I only have under 50,000 km on the odometer. I dont drive much in winter, I'm retired. I love this car but someone needs to fix this.
