Gas Type

Asked by Kashiff Apr 20, 2016 at 01:42 AM about the 2015 Dodge Charger SXT RWD

Question type: General

I just bought a 2015 charger sxt with a 3.6L engine & I
was wondering what's the best type of gas to use. 87,88,
or 89? This is my first charger so I'm kind of iffy as to what
has to put in her.

It should tell you in the owners manual. You should be able to run regular unleaded in it, but the higher octain fuels run cleaner. The premium here in my neck of the woods does not have the ethanol in it that gums up internal parts of the fuel system. But if you throw some fuel injection cleaner in the fuel system once in a while, you can run the lower octain fuel.

A HUGE marketing research study, Optimized chemical mechanism for combustion, the MIT researchers deemed AKI — and more specifically, MON — to be an outdated measure of engine performance, originally designed to apply to older, carbureted engines rather than modern, fuel-injected engines. To bring the octane rating system up to date, the team considered doing away with MON, and basing engine performance solely on RON. " Virtually nothing is gained by filling up with a premium or more expensive grade of fuel than the vehicle manufacturer has recommended, the experts say. And many of the same experts explain that drivers may not lose much performance from their cars by using a lower grade of fuel than recommended by the car manufacturer. There is little difference in energy content of regular versus premium gasoline. They both contain about 111,400 British Thermal Units of energy per gallon. The price difference, however, between the fuel grades is anywhere from 20 cents to 40 cents, depending on where you live in the United States. The experts' consensus goes against the long-held belief by thousand of drivers who fill up with premium only, or on every third or fourth trip to the pump. The idea is to fill up with premium every so often to clean out the engines or rev up the performance of older engines. But according to the experts, this practice is like tossing quarters in a wishing well, since most engines are designed to operate on relatively low-octane regular unleaded gasoline."

I never checked mileage on my motor but it needs the higher octain fuel to run good since it is pushing 400 hp. But of course that is different than the standard automobile out on the road. I do notice a difference in the power my moped has running premium in it tho. Ethanol just causes problems unless you keep up with a fuel system cleaner.

Se, sxt trims have a 3.6L v6 pentastar engine. The r/t model is a 5.7L v8 and the srt models vary between a 6.1L or a 6.4L depending on the year. The se/sxt models have the best fuel economy due to them having the smaller v6 engine.

I have an 2008 charger r/t and according to everything ive read they are not designed to run on premium fuel (90 octane or higher). They are designed to run on 87 or 89 octane. Owners manual says not to run premium fuel.

Octane isn't about gas mileage or power. It's about detonation timing. Higher octane requires slightly higher compression rating causing it to combust when the Piston is higher preventing pre detonation. So while MIT got the BTU rating right, the completely missed the boat as to why there is even a different octane level in the first place.

I have a 2009 dodge charger police package . what fuel should i use . currently use 87. could i use 88 or should i use different ?

The new hemi engine are designed for 87 or 89 octane. If there any programming or modifications to the car you can try high octane but can't guarantee it will make a difference
