Can A 2015 Honda Accord Be Equipped With 225/65R17 Tires ?

Asked by Paul_WB5AGF Nov 05, 2017 at 03:52 PM about the 2015 Honda Accord EX

Question type: Car Customization

(Background - I previously owned a 1997 Nissan Altima with the 5-speed manual transmission. I always wished that it'd had an addional 6th gear so that the engine RPM would be lower at highway speeds for better MPG.)

i now own a 2015 Honda Accord EX (4-cylinder engine) with the 6-speed manual transmission.

The 1997 Nissan Altima's (4-cylinder) engine and the 2015 Honda Accord's engine (4-cylinder) have almost identical displacements.

The 1997 Altima's engine RPM to roadway MPH in 5th gear (its highest) was essentially identically to the 2015 Accord's engine RPM to roadway MPH in 6th gear (its highest). (2,000 RPM engine speed gives 54 MPH.)

I wish that there was a way to change the Accord's final drive ratio from 4.105 to 3.40 but don't believe that there is (and even if so I couldn't afford it). Doing this would cause the first 5 gears to generate the same engine RPM to roadway MPH as is presently covered by all 6 gears ... thus leaving 6th gear to act as a true 'overdrive' gear.

As the 'next-best-thing' .... two questions :

1. Are the wheel wells of the Accord large enough to accomodate 225/65R17 tires ? (initial measurements by me seem to indicate that they are)

2.) Do the speedometer and odometer in the Accord use some form of electronic calibration that would allow them to be recalibrated to read correctly with the larger tires ?

(thanks)

Taller tires would help but probably not to the degree you want. If there are custom tuners available you probably can re-calibrate the speedometer. https://www.carid.com/2015-honda- accord-performance-chips/

If the 225/65R17 tires will fit on the Accord, and if the speedometer and odometer can be recalibrated (I tried the link you provided but it didn't seem to work), this would give a 10.8 percent increase in roadway speed for the same engine RPM (and there would be some improvement in MPG though calculating that is beyond my ability at this time). That is half (in terms of engine RPM reduction for a given highway speed) that could be accomplished if there was a (reasonable) way to change the final drive ratio from 4.105 to 3.4 (this would cause the first 5 gears to cover the same engine-RPM-to-roadway-MPH as presently covered by all 6 gears). Thanks - Paul

You may be unhappy with the off the line performance with tall tires.

re> "You may be unhappy with the off the line performance with tall tires. " (big smile here + laugh) ! I'm the guy that people honk at while going through an intersection .... just after the light goes green ..... they want to accelerate so quickly that they find my shifting-through-gears (coming-off-the-light) to be too slow. I've even had people pull around me and pass while still in the intersection (I've seen it happen to other people also). My best estimate ... based-on : - My 2015 Honda Accord has essentially the same engine displacement as my old 1997 Nissan Altima (so torque & horsepower should be in-the-same-ballpark) - If the first 5-gears of my Accord's transmission (plus final drive ratio) gave engine RPMs (versus roadway speed) in the same range as did the 5-gears (all that it had) of my old Altima, then general performance of the two vehicles should not be too dissimilar (assuming that the masses of the two vehicles were also in the same range) - This (the rough 'calculation' listed above) would be the case if it were possible to change the final drive ratio of my Accord from 4.105 (stock) to 3.40. Changing tire size (as I've previously described) goes only about half-way so it would have less effect than changing the final drive ratio. - Paul
