Changing an engine from 1999 to 2008 does it works?

I have a 1999 bmw 318i and i want to change the
engine from 1999 318i to 2008 318i does it works
no need any parts? And if it need any parts to
change pls tell me

A 9 year difference is far too long of a time for an engine swap and this would also be illegal in some states due to smog laws.
