Sonoma will not turn over and doesn't click at starter

Asked by Khuddleston2 Jun 19, 2014 at 09:35 AM about the 1998 GMC Sonoma 2 Dr SLE Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have replaced the battery, starter, clutch switch, relay and checked all fuses. I have
power going to starter and when I jump it to ground motor will turn over but when I turn
key to start it does nothing. I have 12 volts on my constant so not sure what else I can
check. Any ideas? I'm I the only one to ever have this problem?

I have the same problem with my 97 Sanoma . It was starting and running fine but the oil pressure would drop after warming up so I changed the oil pump and now it won't crank at all . I have tested the battery , starter and everything else that I can think of but it still won't crank . It acts like the starter isn't even there . Has anyone had any luck with figuring out what could cause this and how to fix it ? Please help me .

I have just found out that manual transmissions only have the clutch safety switch and only automatic transmissions have the neutral safety switches. Maybe this is helpful. FYI I can't get my 94 Sonoma to start either. I replaced my starter, battery, clutch safety switch but I just now realized I need to check all my fuses.... Just doing some things backwards....lol...

Check the battery first, if it does not have 12voltsto, it may need charging or replacing, the starter draws a lot of juice to crank. Then check the "CRANK FUSE" ON LEFT SIDE OF THE DASH, IT IS FUSE # 20 a 10 amp spade type on my 1996 Sonoma. Then check the "START RELAY" IT IS ON THE FIRE WALL It's the one to the right side of four little black boxes (aka relays) I swapped it with the one next to it and BOOM!! IT STARTED RIGHT UP, I Then went to my old Shucks/Checker store and got a new one. Ps ; there is also a Clutch Lock out switch on a stick, or a neutral saftey switch on a auto transmission. , and a starter selinoid attached to the starter, And of course the starter it's self, if the above don't fix it you may want to look at those items. Good luck. ..seadog
