Why can't I get the key out of the switch with a dead battery?

I went out this morning to start my Jimmy and the battery was dead however when I went to turn the switch back off it wouldn't turn all the way back and now my key is still in the switch. Can someone tell me why? Does the car have to be running then turn it off to get it out? It won't even go in gear with the battery dead what is up with this thing?

This is normal for most newer vehicles - your key is locked in the switch for the moment. Electrical systems operate everything, including ignition and security systems. Charge the battery, or get a boost - and you will be able to free your key.

My daughters car did this and as soon as I attached the jumper cables she was able to remove her key.
