It's usually best to go with what the vehicle was designed for , ie. the original motor . If you're looking for a cheap way out of a bad motor you can forget it .

Correct, find the same model engine that is in the truck for the least amount of headaches and cost. So either your friends truck came with a 4cyl 2.2L or a V6 4.3L, find one from another Chevy S10 or Sonoma, I would think years 1998 to 2003 would be a good bet. check out car part.com for engines and compatibility.
