Engine stops running when braking at stop light, not every time

Asked by Lausi Apr 10, 2014 at 11:33 AM about the 2002 Ford Ranger 4 Dr Edge 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When I approach a stop light and have to push the brakes harder then a normal slow coasting, just before stopping the engines kind of shakes and dies. I have to put it in neutral and restart the engine. It feels like when you drive a stick shift and you approach a stop light and you do not push the clutch just prior stopping, the engine shakes and dies. I drove it last weekend about 500 miles and it did it four times.
Any suggestions?
Thank you

Maybe the torque converter is getting damage.

My 93 ranger computer had to be replaced and when i got my truck back it ran awful. The idle control was making my truck buck and jump to the point i ordered a new one. It worked OK for a while, then all of a sudden the engine started to go dead while making a turn during braking which is a pretty harry experience. After unable to find an answer in the net, I desided to reprogram my truck computer. It has been 2 days now and the truck has been running just fine. I found the "idle speed procedure" on the net. Its about a 30 min. job, but not very hard. Hope this helps someone else-------
