when would you change  transmission fluid

if it smells burnt , they say not to purge it out with a machine , if you drop the pan you never get it all . I use an old shop vac and send a tube down the dip stick pipe and suck it out , after 4-5 times you get 70%-80% fresh because you never get it all , the filter has such a large surface area that they rarely clog . You can also pull the lower line that goes to the radiator and let the pump pump it out when you start it in park , it'll be high pressure so have a hose secured on the fitting and anchored so it doesn't blow all over the place .
