How to dial 911 handsfree

I love finally having a car that I can make handsfree calls with! But, I needed to phone the police awhile ago and I couldn't get it to dial 911.

And what do I do if I call a number that I need to 'Press 1 to continue'? Do I need to make sure the phone is in my lap?

once i used the red onstar button... i'm not sure if i was on free trail or not.
