My 2014 Subaru Outback wagon has shut off intermittently while running & in gear. First time was the other day at about 30 MPH. Today it happened five times. Total engine shut down. What could it be?

Has only happened twice, not consistently every time it has been driven. All electrical and
engine shuts down. Car rolls to a stop. Power steering fails, too. I'm worried for my safety!
Subaru dealer told me after the first episode that they could find nothing wrong! It is still
under warranty.

I would have the service manager take the car home for a weekend to see if it replicates the problem again. It is a safety hazard when there is no power steering due to the car shutting down at speed. Im sure he/she wouldnt put their family in the car. Also I would check the outback forums to see if any other owners have had the same issues.

Sounds like a computer problem, take it to an independent garage for an unbiased evaluation if you cannot get a straight answer from the dealer. Yes, this is a big safety issue.

I have a 2013 Subaru Outback 3.6R with about 40,000 miles on it. I was driving on the highway in traffic this past week, going about 65 mph and the engine stalled. The car "lunged" a couple of times then completely died. Had to coast through traffic to the shoulder of the road. Dealer can't replicate the issue so is unable to make any type of repair. Hello - I have a question for all the Subaru experts if you could please. I was planning to buy a 2011 Outback tonight, 95K miles. What I found out today is making me question the investment. After reading about the CVT issues, I started digging and confirmed that this Outback did have an issue just a few months ago and SOA confirmed the CVT in this vehicle has a 24K or 24 month warranty since it was replaced with a remanufactered (NOT REBUILD) CVT under warranty. So, should I buy it and have peace of mind that the CVT issues have been addressed and maybe I'll get 100k miles out of it or walk away? Can't afford a new one, so was looking for exactly this price range - I think I should happy at this news since the known CVT problems have been addressed but could I be getting into a money pit.
