2003 Ford Thunderbird engine light stays on

The engine light came on suddenly & stays on right after you start ignition & stays on
until you turn motor off.

my 2003 thunderbird check engine light stays on, what could be the problem, had it checked at a parts house, they werent sure,, so maybe you can help,, disconnect battery cable does it for a while, it runs great , just light is on,,
