car dies out

I have a 2003 Ford Taurus with 172K miles. My car has died out on several occasions,
usually starts right up. It always happens when I'm stuck in traffic on the expressway;
when we stop and go. When it happens, the oil and battery light will flicker on before it
dies. Mechanic said I had lots of carbon by the engine, tried a chemical treatment. It
helped a little at first but now 5 months later, doing it again. Now I am noticing it
"jumps" next gear if I'm idling around the 10mph mark. I know there's a lot of miles but
I can't afford a car payment and need to fix this so I can work and get the hubby to
dialysis and dr appointments.

Dirty or faulty idle air control valve and/or dirty throttle plate can cause this type of issues.

I have the same problem but when I come to a stop or red light it takes to pick up speed and sometimes it gets stuck under 20miles and I have to stop and restart the car
