How do i tell what size and year an engine is by the numbers on the block

I recently purchased a 1985 el Camino only to find someone changed the intake, timing
cover and harmonic balancer. I need to set the timing and ensure the spark plus wiring is
correct. the new intake has no firing order on it so I need some help.How do i tell what
size and year an engine is by the numbers on the block
