Automatic transmission 1988 Ranger

I have 1988 FORD Ranger XLT with the 2.9 V6 engine, automatic 4 speed overdrive
A4LD transmission.
The truck does not pull after you put it in Drive, Overdrive or any other gear. On older
vehicles you usually had at least a low first, second and reverse gears while having
most automatic transmission problems.
Someone told me the pump, clutch or shift solenoid could be the problem. What are
Y'alls thoughts and experiences?

Recently pulling a trailer, lost OD and 3rd. Changed the Vacuum Modulator Valve ($35) on the passenger side of the transmission. Now I have all of the gears but still need to adjust for correct shifting.
Ranger Dan Thank You for your reply. I wasn't hauling or pulling a heavy load when the transmission gave out in this Ranger, But I was going up hill and decided to stand on the accelerator. After a few seconds I heard a loud pop and then the engine over revved because the transmission stopped carring the load.

I have the same problem , it happened right after changing fluid and filter , so changed modulator valve but still nothing ? Any answers?
Did you ever figure this out ? I'm having same issue
