On a 2.3 L engine, why did they lower the compression when they changed to FI from carburation

From info I've been able to dig up. (84 2.3L carburetor has higher compression) when FoMoCo changed to fuel injection (85) they lowered the compression ratio.
WHY???

Yup. Most likely to cool combustion temperatures and lower Oxides of Nitrogen.
