does my starter have a ground ford f250

i see a place for a hot wire but no ground

What motor? IIRC for that era truck, with a gas motor, Ford used a fender-mounted Starter Solenoid and a Starter. The switching takes place in the Solenoid, so no, you shouldn't see a ground on the starter itself. Newer, one-piece Starter/Solenoid assemblies actually have an integral ground that connects the solenoid to the starter, which provides the ground because it's a big hunk of metal bolted to an even bigger hunk of metal. Plenty of surface area to provide a ground once the engine itself is grounded to the chassis.
